about

In 1996 the three surviving Beatles released two songs based on John's demos, reworked using modern studio technology (at that time) to "unite" the Fab Four once again. 'Free As A Bird' & 'Real Love' were given the Jeff Lynne sonic touch with overdubs from Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr. But rumor had it there was a THIRD demo of John's which the 'threetles' attempted to rework, a third song which simply DIDN'T work, and was never released. Debuting on WXRT radio Chicago on April 1st, 1999, 'No Easy Task', was considered the "final installment" of the Lennon demo sessions, recorded by the surviving Beatles in the spirit of the previous Anthology singles.

In truth, 'No East Task' was actually an April Fools gag courtesy of WXRT Radio Chicago. Production assistant Eric Howell (aka King Mixer) was then a new hire to the station and was given the assignment by his new boss of creating 'a new Beatles song, something that might actually pass as real, never heard...but make it funny". No easy task, indeed.

Howell accepted this impossible challenge, immediately booking studio time at a local recording studio and calling upon the mega talented Casey McDonough (Howell's long-time Beatle pal) to write and record the April Fools track...in just 48 hours. Recorded on Saturday and airing on Monday, XRT's baffled listeners called the request line weeks after the song's April 1st broadcast, repeatedly asking why they could not find this mysterious new 'Beatles track' in any stores or online. April Fools! That's why!

And now ladies and gentlemen... please give it up for...'The Fab 3: No Easy Task'!

King Mixer Chicago, Illinois

King Mixer is both musical ensemble and performing alias of Chicago singer/songwriterEric Howell. LP studio guests feature members of Smoking Popes, NRBQ, BoDeans and Off Broadway. At a moment when guitars are fighting for a place in modern music King Mixer offers up deliberately schizophrenic rock, which grows more satisfying with each genre-defying turn, written and produced by Howell. ... more
